In 1964, The General Film Organization commissioned Youssef Chahine to direct a large-scale color film glorifying the High Dam construction project. But after filming of the first film (this film, Al-Neil Wal-7Ayah) was completed, and after it had been given the title "The People and the Nile" in 1968, the General Cinema Organization rejected it, as did the Russian side. The film was not screened in Egypt or abroad. Shahine was then asked to make another film on the same subject, so he shot similar events with some of the same cast, and it was released as Al-Nas Wal-Neil (a 1972 production).
The film disappeared for several years after its production until it was found at the "Cinémathèque Française" around the end of the 1990s. It was restored and a negative was made for it, and it was screened for the first time in France (and was never screened in Egypt).
In the credits, Seif Abdel-Rahman's name is written as only Seif El-Din.
