International American actress Cate Blanchett appeared as an extra in the Partita (her first acting experience). She said on Late Show with David Letterman that, while studying, she went to Europe and then Egypt, where her friend told her she had met a Scottish young man looking for extras with American features for a film. At the same time, she did not have enough money to stay in Cairo for a week. She said the production would pay two Egyptian pounds per person, enough for a week's stay (she may have misremembered the amount), and promised they would eat free falafel during filming. But it was very boring, although she greatly admired the Egyptian extras playing the match spectators. She left after a short while because they did not give them the food they had promised!
