In 1964, The General Film Organization commissioned artist Youssef Chahine to direct a large color film glorifying the High Dam construction project. But after he finished shooting the first film (this film, Al-Neil Wal-7Ayah), which had been given the title "The People and the Nile" in 1968, the Public Cinema Organization rejected it, and the Russian side also objected. The film was not shown in Egypt or abroad. Shahine was then asked to make another film on the same subject, so he shot similar events with some of the same actors, and it was released as Al-Nas Wal-Neil (produced in 1972).
The first film, Al-Nas Wal-Neil (1968), was not shown in Egypt. It was shown for the first time in France around 1999, after a lost copy was found at the "Cinémathèque Française" and restored.
