Early Life and Beginnings

  • He grew up a very poor orphan, and his talent for acting appeared in primary school.
  • He graduated in the second cohort of the High Institute of Arab Theatre Arts in 1949, then joined George Abyad's troupe and Fatma Rushdi's troupe.
  • He also graduated from the Faculty of Applied Arts and taught sculpture there until the mid-1970s.

Career

  • He founded four successive theatre companies: Free Theatre in 1952, Comedy Theatre in 1963, United Artists in 1966, and Madboulism in 1975.
  • His career spanned more than fifty years and included about 150 films, 120 plays, and 30 television series.
  • He began radio work in «Sa'a Li-Qalbak» and became one of the major makers of stage and film comedy.
  • He mentored prominent comedians including Adel Emam, Saeed Saleh, Younis Shalaby, and Mohamed Sobhy.
