She began in childhood by singing with her father at saints' festivals and weddings.
She moved to Cairo in 1922.
Her first melody was composed by Sheikh Abo-Al-Ela Mohammed, for the song "I Would Sacrifice Myself for Him Whether He Preserved Love or Lost It".
She formed her first musical ensemble in 1926.
She joined Egyptian Radio after it was established in 1934 (she was the first artist to join the radio at the time).
She founded the first Musicians' Syndicate in 1942 and headed it for ten years.
She performed about 700 songs.
After the 1967 defeat in Egypt, Um Kalthoum formed The National Gathering Authority by holding concerts outside Egypt in support of the war effort.
